Frequently Asked Questions

Should you travel with a Cardboard Box, Soft Shell, or Hard Shell bicycle case:

Having traveled extensively you see how rough the baggage handlers are with your luggage and you try to figure out a way for your luggage and your contents to survive, unscathed. To that end, the best way to go is a hard shell case even though it is the heaviest (relatively speaking) as compared to soft shell cases or cardboard.

Airport Baggage handling illustrated in the following videos:

  1. YouTube  Videos:

  2.    http://youtu.be/QLOHtHve_u8?t=5s      The American Airlines Eagle Ate My Bike      http://youtu.be/ERmgA2Zw4y8      http://youtu.be/geeldwbn3jk

Should you ship your bike in advance of your trip to reduce travel expenses :

  1. Generally it much less costly to bring the bike with you. However, if you are traveling with many bags, large number of family members etc., an alternative would be to ship the bike(s) in advance with a courier service such as: Fedex, UPS, Purolator, DHL, Greyhound

  2. Also consider “how long will I be away from my bike” from a training prospective if you are going to a race.

Large Groups:

  1. With a large group you benefit from bulk rates - suggest Google Query:   Air Freight Companies

  2. Overseas trips suggest you contact companies that specialize in Air Freight such as:  Kuehne-Nagel.com

  3. Contact various airlines as they also offer cargo rates

  4. Domestic trips suggest you contact ground freight companies FedEx, UPS, YellowRoadways , however there are numerous local brokers and national freight companies.

Your case got damaged during the flight. How to make a claim with the airline?

  1. Nothing is indestructible, especially with grounds crew mission to get luggage into the cargo hold as quickly as possible. We therefore suggest the following:

  2. At destination, inspect your case for any damage right after picking up at the oversize carousel. If there is damage, speak with the airline luggage counter staff to make a claim. Do not indicate that airport security opened the case, rather it was damaged during transportation.

  3. If you inspect the case after you leave the airport, a claim will have little merit as it can be deemed as damaged after the fact. Hence the reason to check within the luggage pick up area.

Which Airlines have the Best / Worst Baggage Record?

  1. Flying a particular carrier? How do they compare when it comes to your luggage?

  2. The U.S. Dept. of Transport (DOT) compile very useful reports to assist the traveling consumer under: Air Travel Consumer Reports

Airport Security :

  1. Traveling with your bike may vary from airport to airport in terms of airport security.

  2. More details:  Canada (CATSA) Website , USA (TSA) Website , European Website

  3. Locks: If you decide to lock your case, we suggest the following:

  4. Use only approved TSA locks - see details TSA website. We sell the MasterLock version, however there are numerous manufacturers - see link . These are locks that have a key number underneath indicating to airport security to which one of their keys will open the lock. Although rare, airport security may not have the key or are lazy, in which case they will cut-off the lock for baggage inspection.

  5. Do not use zip / cable ties as they are (typically) deemed as permanent as they cannot be opened by airport security. Hence, they are cut-off for luggage inspection.

  6. Inspection Tags:

  7. If your case has been inspected you will see the following notice for:  CANADA CATSA-Tag.jpg  (luggage exterior)  USA TSA-Notice_Of_Inspection_Tag.jpg  (luggage interior)

  8. Advise:

  9. Whenever possible suggest that you wait and observe at a non threatening (say 4m+ / 12ft+) distance from the security officer, rather than just leaving the case. This provides assurance that your contents are repacked properly. At many USA airports the cases are opened behind a cordoned off area or behind a wall which won’t allow for observation. This is one reason why we recommend that the case not be filled to the brim. By doing so, inspection is more difficult and makes for a higher probability that the case will not be repacked properly which in turn leads to a higher chance of damage to the contents.

FAQ

Do you need to deflate the tires :

It is not really necessary since the fuselage is pressurized, however it is advisable to reduce the air pressure by say ~20Psi / 1.4Bar / 140kPa. In this way, the tire will easily accommodate varying altitude and temperatures during flight.

Do you need to rent a particular size vehicle to transport the bike case :

It’s not really necessary to rent a large vehicle unless the number of bike cases is greater than two (2) as these cases are surprisingly small. Ideally rent a vehicle that has the ability to fold the rear seats. For example, Thule/Trico cases easily fit into a Honda Civic either through the trunk with the rear seats folded down, or on the back seats along the width of the vehicle which will leave room for additional luggage in the trunk. With BikeBoxAlan cases be aware that the case shape is flat only on one side and as such do not stack as well as the flat Thule/Trico cases. This may necessitate a larger opening (a different vehicle in the same rental class) such as a hatchback and or a larger vehicle. If you’re unsure, call us for assistance.
